The Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation has published a guide titled “SLAPP Lawsuits in a Nutshell” that explains the phenomenon of baseless claims through SLAPP lawsuits. Also, the Guide contains the most important information about the legal and other characteristics of SLAPP, as a mechanism of intimidation of the media, individuals and organizations for their work in the public interest.

SLAPP lawsuits are characterized by legal claims that are without merit and serve as an abuse of rights or procedural rules. These lawsuits are not filed with the goal of actual legal assessment or vindication of rights, but rather to limit freedom of speech by abusing court processes, silence critics and intimidate anyone who dares to publicly criticize the plaintiff.

The primary goal of SLAPP plaintiffs is not to actually win in court, but to pressure defendants and induce a sense of censorship or self-censorship.

The “Guide to SLAPP Lawsuits” points out the key features of SLAPP lawsuits, identifies who are the most common plaintiffs and who are the defendants, and gives practical advice on how to recognize them and how to act if you become the subject of such a lawsuit.
